D.C. Voluntary Bar Associations join Bar Leaders to file amicus brief in support of Susman Godfrey LLP and the rule of law

On April 25, 2025, five Washington, DC voluntary bar associations joined 45 past presidents of voluntary bar associations and 20 former leaders of the District of Columbia Bar in filing an amicus brief in Susman Godfrey LLP v, Executive Office of the President.

The bar associations that joined the amicus brief were the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the Trial Lawyers Association of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association.

The amicus brief states,

“In this case, as well as in other similar instances targeting Covington & Burling, Perkins Coie, Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, Jenner & Block, and WilmerHale, the President of the United States has chosen to retaliate against lawyers and law firms that – as he unilaterally declares – engaged in representing clients or causes with which he disagrees, especially cases in which he himself had a personal interest.

The President is using purported power to govern by “Executive Order” to weaponize the force of the national government to retaliate against perceived political opponents.”
